The One on the First Day

Today was the first day of school for students.

I have never felt so indifferent about the first day of school in my life.

To be honest I was dreading it.  I may have been a little whiny yesterday about the whole ordeal.

I didn't even have my outfit planned until it was time to get dressed this morning.    So unlike me!

I still had a few copies to make when I arrived at school this morning.  What a headache.  Our school has the weirdest paper.  It is slightly longer than 8.5 x 11 so you have to select a special thing on the computer before you print.  You also have to select where you want it printed EVERY time.  It only took me around ten attempts to get my papers printed.

Not how I wanted to start the year.

After that though, things went smoothly.

My homeroom is full of sweethearts.  I have never received so many compliments in one day.

I think I will like teaching 5th and 6th grade.

Biggest highlight of the day?  I get a 40 minute lunch!!  I don't even know what to do with that.  It is twice as long as what I'm accustomed too.

WooHoo!!

All in all it was a great first day.

I'm ready to start problem solving tomorrow.

Have you had your first day yet?  How did it go?

  1. I'm a first year teacher, and I was crazy enough to take on the Yearbook class in addition to English 10 and Journalism. I was pleasantly surprised and supremely grateful to find that my Yearbook students are going to be as much my students as my teachers. :)

  2. I had my third day today, and I'm a first year teacher as well... I was FREAKING OUT. Like throw up and cry freaking out...but I had 7th graders, and it was their first year in the building, so they were all scared..so it actually went rather smooth! LOL :)

  3. The hardest part is over for you. Well, not counting January, of course. I start back Monday with a work day and teacher inservice, although I've been working in my classroom for the last two weeks. Our students come back after Labor Day, a schedule I've not been on for years. I love starting in September instead of August.

  5. Hi Katie,
I came across your blog by google searching "Top Middle School Teacher Blogs" and I must say, I can see why it came up on the list! The reason I am contacting you is that my colleague, Rob Kuban and myself are trying to promote our book The Ultimate Survival Guide for Teachers (available on Amazon). We would love to send you a free ebook version of the book with no strings attached. All we ask is that if you like it and find it worthy, just give the book an honest review on your blog. If you don't like, no review will be necessary and I promise we will not contact you again. We think it is hilarious, meaningful, inspirational and very helpful to any teacher, but I guess we are a little bias!

Thanks for your time and have a great school year!
    By the way, Awesome blog!

  6. Sorry, I meant Mrs. Weaver, not Katie. Have a blessed day!

  7. First off, I love your blog. Definitely inspiring me to start one once I get hired (fingers crossed). I am a pre-service middle school teacher and we've had several classes focusing on the first day of school and what to do. They already intimidate me and I've never actually had one.
